Bloomfield Public Schools welcomed staff back for the 2026–2027 school year on Monday, August 24, with an energetic and inspiring Annual Convocation at Bloomfield High School, setting the tone for a year focused on growth, achievement, and excellence.
This year’s theme, “Back to the ’70s,” brought music, dancing, colorful costumes, and plenty of school spirit to the celebration. The theme also carried an important connection to the district’s goals for student achievement, reflecting the district’s commitment to working toward a score in the 70s on the state accountability index.
Superintendent Dr. Tracy A. Youngberg challenged staff to recognize the important role they play in helping students reach their full potential and contributing to the district’s continued growth.
“As we work to get back to the 70s on the accountability index, I want to share with you some examples of how I believe we are already planting seeds that will have a profound impact on the future—near and far,” Dr. Youngberg said. “Seeds that make our students know what is possible, what is right and just, and what being a part of a true learning community means.”
Dr. Youngberg also emphasized that the district’s progress is the result of the collective efforts of its staff.
“The things that are happening in our district are extraordinary, and I think all of you are extraordinary,” she said. “Please continue to show up for students and show up for the professional in general. Whether you know it or not, the things you do and say—and the things we don’t do—have a profound impact on how our students see themselves, what they believe is possible, and how engaged they are in their learning journey.”
A highlight of the morning was an inspiring Disney-themed message from 2026 Teacher of the Year Jen Coleman, who encouraged staff to remember why they chose the teaching profession, find joy in the work they do, and lean on the people who make the journey better. Her message reminded colleagues that while the work is not always easy, finding your purpose, embracing your joy, and surrounding yourself with your people can make all the difference in creating meaningful experiences for students. In a special surprise, the staff at Laurel also joined together to serenade Jen with a heartfelt rendition of My Girl, adding a joyful and memorable moment to the celebration.
The ’70s theme added an element of fun and celebration to the morning, with staff dancing and enjoying music from the decade. The festivities also included a ’70s-themed costume contest, giving staff an opportunity to showcase their creativity and school spirit.
Following Convocation at Bloomfield High School, staff participated in professional development throughout the day, preparing for the work ahead as they welcomed students back for the new school year.
The day served as both a celebration of the accomplishments of the past year and a reminder of the collective responsibility staff share for the future of Bloomfield Public Schools.
“You have the power to make an amazing impact on young people in this community,” Dr. Youngberg told staff. “You are already cultivating excellence. Please keep up the good work as we still have much work to do!”
With the energy of the ’70s and a renewed focus on the future, Bloomfield Public Schools is beginning the 2026–2027 school year committed to planting seeds, inspiring growth, and cultivating excellence.
